The challenge

4,200 articles, thousands of dead ends

Northgate Media Group publishes dozens of articles a week. Internal linking was entirely manual — and it had fallen years behind.

Editors couldn’t keep pace, so thousands of articles had no inbound internal links at all (orphans), anchor text was inconsistent, and nobody could see how authority actually moved between pages. They needed real automation — without handing editorial control to a black box, and without risking damage to a decade of published content.

The solution

We designed and built LinkMesh: a single WordPress plugin that turns internal linking into an automated, measurable system.

Keyword rules link relevant phrases across the site automatically; a semantic engine suggests the most relevant targets for any page; an internal PageRank model reveals exactly where link equity flows; and an interactive graph maps the entire structure. Every link is inserted safely and is fully reversible, so the editorial team could adopt it without fear.

The architecture graph turned an invisible link structure into something the whole team could see and act on.

What we built

Inside the plugin

  • DOM-aware linking engine — inserts links without ever breaking markup, skipping existing links, headings, and code.
  • Semantic suggestions — local TF-IDF relevance plus an optional AI-embeddings engine.
  • Internal PageRank — iterative link-equity computation with priority-page alerts.
  • Architecture graph — a dependency-free force-directed visualization on canvas.
  • Anchor-text health — over-optimization and low-value anchor detection.
  • Auto-apply & one-click revert — automatic linking on save with byte-perfect undo.
  • Orphan detection & reports — per-page inbound link and rule reporting.
  • WP-CLI & background jobs — engineered to stay fast across thousands of posts.

The process

How it came together

  1. Discovery & link auditMapped the existing content graph, quantified orphan pages, and defined what “controlled automation” had to mean for the editorial team.
  2. Product & UX designDesigned an admin experience that fits naturally into WordPress — keyword setup inside the editor, clear modes, and at-a-glance reporting.
  3. Engine developmentBuilt the DOM-aware linker, the TF-IDF and embeddings relevance engines, and the internal PageRank model.
  4. QA & safety testingValidated insertion against an acceptance gate: apply-then-revert restores content byte-for-byte, verified across varied post fixtures.
  5. Deployment & packagingShipped to the client’s sites and prepared a WordPress.org-compliant release with full documentation.

The results

From dead ends to a connected library

LinkMesh automatically rebuilt internal links across 4,200+ articles and cut orphan pages by 78% in the first three weeks — with zero manual link inserts.

“We’d been hand-linking articles for years and still had thousands of orphans. LinkMesh fixed our entire internal link structure on autopilot — and the equity view finally showed us where our authority was actually going. It paid for itself within a month.”

Features

  • Automatic keyword linking — assign a keyword to a page and LinkMesh links matching phrases across your whole site on its own, with auto-apply on save so you never touch a button.
  • Semantic AI suggestions — ranks the most relevant pages to link to by actual content relevance (not just exact keywords), using a built-in local engine or your own AI key.
  • Internal PageRank / link-equity routing — computes how authority flows through your internal links so you can steer it toward your most important pages.
  • Interactive site architecture graph — a live, draggable map of your internal links where hubs grow larger and orphan pages light up.
  • Orphan page detection — instantly surfaces published content with zero inbound internal links so nothing gets stranded.
  • Anchor-text health checks — flags over-optimized or generic anchors (“click here”) to keep your linking natural and penalty-safe.
  • Two linking modes — Render (links shown live, content never altered) or Content (real links written into posts), so you choose between safety and portability.
  • One-click revert — every plugin-inserted link can be removed cleanly, restoring your content byte-for-byte while leaving your hand-made links untouched.
  • DOM-aware engine — inserts links without breaking markup, never links inside existing links, headings, or code, and matches on word boundaries.
  • Built for scale — WP-CLI commands, background processing, and a precomputed link index keep it fast even on sites with thousands of posts.
